MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996): Symphony No. 17, Op. 137 "Memory".

Description: This 53-minute work from 1982-84 is the first of a trilogy to which Weinberg gave the title "The Threshold of War" and looks back not only to the Second World War but probably also to his persecution under the later stages of Stalin's regime. A grey, sorrowful first movement is followed by a big, agitated Allegro molto, a fairly brief and vigorous scherzo and a long Andante finale, sometimes frozen in terms of emotion, ends in a grandiose, G major conclusion.
