Description: As a look at the opus number will tell you, Weinberg's Concertino was his very next work after the Jewish-colored Sinfonietta No. 1 in 1948. Its world premiere recording reveals a modest, lyrical, sometimes bittersweet work whose virtue is that it is devoid of the larger issues and emotionalism of the symphonies. The two single-movement concerti coupled here come from the beginning and end of the 1890s - Conus' once-as-popular-as-the-Tchaikovsky-Violin-Concerto work which just got a high-profile DG recording by young violinist David Barrett, and the richly melodic and delicately orchestrated concerto by his teacher, Arensky. Sergei Ostrovsky (violin), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; Thomas Sanderling.
