Description: This 22-year-old violinist grew up learning both violin and hardanger fiddle and she provides four examples of Norwegian folk songs from particular fiddlers in particular playing styles. That 13 minutes of authenticity shines a new light on Sparre Olsen's 1928 transcriptions of folk violin pieces and leads to Thoresen's 13-minute Yr. Here, the colors, textures and rhythms of authentic folk music are placed in a more controlled and composed musical environment. Hemsing points out that Yr is "extremely difficult to play for a violinist schooled only in the classical tradition, at the same time it is impossible to play for a folk musician because it is so technically demanding." Ragnhild Hemsing (violin, hardanger fiddle), Tor Espen Aspaas (piano).
