Description: Although the 1953 violin concerto, coming from the height of Rózsa's Hollywood years, deeply Romantic and gorgeously lyrical, is pretty well served on CD these days, it's surprising to see that older recordings of the other two works are out of print. In 1943, the composer wrote something "anti-Hollywood" - the Concerto for Strings - which was not really that anti-Hollywood, rather being muscular and tough (like his scores for "Double Indemnity" and "The Killers" rather than the hyper-Romantic "The Jungle Book". The early Theme, Variations and Finale dates from Paris in 1933, whose melancholy theme seems to look back at the Hungarian homeland Rózsa had just left and wouldn't see again for a long while. Jennifer Pike (violin), BBC Philharmonic; Rumon Gamba.
