Description: "American Mavericks" is the title of this compendium of recordings taken from two live concerts in 2010 and 2012 with Cowell's trademark polytonality and colorful use of tone-clusters to the fore in both of his pieces, although the 13-minute Synchrony of 1930, written for a Martha Graham ballet which she never finished choreographing, also has its share of attractive lyricism. Although there was a digital recording of the piano concerto on col legno 11 years ago, the only other CD recording (no longer available) of Synchrony was the old CRI. Harrison's 1972-73 concerto dazzles with its scintillating colors, derived from Asian percussion styles and exotic scales, and equally exotic melodies and compelling rhythms. Jeremy Denk (piano), Paul Jacobs (organ), San Francisco Symphony; Michael Tilson Thomas.
