Description: Bordes was known for his work in recovering and performing French and Italian Renaissance music on the one hand, and old Basque folk music on the other. While several of the piano pieces here have Basque elements, the mélodies here - half of the total Bordes wrote and all 16 of his Verlaine settings - are particularly striking for the perfect coupling of accompaniment and text. The songs are arrayed by tone, from ecstatic affirmation of life and love through grief and sorrow to bitter resignation; the piano parts not only are perfect for the poetry but they could almost stand alone as solo pieces. Second volume coming next year too! French-English texts. Sophie Marin-Degor (soprano), Jean-Sébastien Bou (baritone), François-René Duchable (piano).
