Description: Just six months ago we had the Dutton Epoch disc of Sherwood's Piano Concerto No. 2, a late work from 1933 whose conservatism made it sound like it could have been written 50-60 years earlier; well, here are works written 33-47 years earlier and they still sound a little conservative. After all, Reger, Schoenberg and Zemlinsky were all active already in the last decade of the 19th century but Sherwood (an Englishman born and raised in Dresden), a student of Draeseke, firmly belonged to the line of Mendelssohn-Schumann-Brahms and in these melodious, mostly lyrical sonatas and short pieces, he does honor to that tradition. Joseph Spooner (cello), David Owen Norris (piano).
