Description: Playing with Fire is a concerto for jazz band and wind ensemble, for all practical purposes a jazz piece, not n exercise in crossing over or fusing with anything else. The lively first movement evokes the toe-tapping energy of the big band and swing era, incorporating a tribute to drummer Ray Bauduc by referring to his unique style of drumming. A sultry, Gershwinesque blues, with extended improvised cornet solos, serves a a slow movement. The finale is a vigorous up-tempo exploration of a bluesy tune, this time featuring a clarinet solo, then increasingly taken over by the full ensemble in big band mode, finishing the work with a powerful climax. The other works are more standard wind band fare, thoroughly tonal, accessible and appealing. The Dances incorporate lively Latin rhythms to evoke the spirit of San Antonio, Texas, while the boldly colorful three-movement symphony draws its inspiration from the grandeur of celestial phenomena, emphasized by the memorable use of a Bach chorale in the finale. Dallas Wind Symphony; Jerry Junkin, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band.
