Description: Adriano's Brun cycle passes its halfway point with this recording of the young composer's first symphony. Completed in early 1902, it goes quite a way toward illustration Brun's statement of the time that he preferred to continue Brahms' symphonic tradition than to adopt the methods of the New German School, Wagner or Richard Strauss. You'll hear Brahms' First in the stormy, violent first movement and Brahms' Second at the beginning of the finale. The slow second movement is a poetic conveying of Brun's thoughts while taking in an Alpine panorama and the scherzo perhaps the most original movement. The Ouvertüre comes from the other end of Brun's career (1950), a boisterous, dare I say Richard Straussian piece based on an old Bern church Lied "In Gottes Namen heb ich's an". Only Symphonies Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to go! Moscow Symphony Orchestra; Adriano.
