Description: Hurlstone's half-hour-long 1905 trio, not completely unknown (there is a Lyrita two-disc set of his music which contains it) is a gracious, low-key work with strong whiffs of Brahms and Dvorák. The other work of the same length is d'Ollone's 1920 trio, the largest-scale chamber work we have of his so far in the mini-revival that seems to be going on at the moment. It has the clarity one would expect from a French composer united with a virile late Romanticism. The little nine-minute Fantasy Trio by the young Australian Miriam Hyde (1933) shows an affinity with Rachmaninov. Wirén's 1932 trio is a fine example of his infusion of neo-baroque style with his native Romantic sensibilities. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Trio Anima Mundi.
