Description: Discovered in a manuscript in Telemann's own hand in the mid 1980s, this is the only Passion known by the composer to have been composed specifically for somewhere other than Hamburg, in this case, Danzig in 1754. In keeping with the local tradition, there are no arias, only recitatives and chorales (the latter based entirely on Bible passages - no contemporary sacred poetry here). The opening sinfonia and 66 following numbers take just over 76 minutes and the whole edifice is yet another tribute to Telemann's ability to create tension and drama from the most basic musical resources. No texts. Martin Klietmann (tenor), Klaus Mertens (bass), Cantamus Chamber Choir Halle, Männerchor bouquet vocalis Halle, Capella Savaria; Pál Németh. Original 1995 NCA release.
