Description: Nessler was known for his simple melodies, formulaic construction and librettos after fairy-tales or historical epics. Here, for his most successful opera (he wasn't exactly a one-hit wonder since his Pied Piper of Hamelin also did rather well), he used a well-known epic poem and gained over 900 performances in northern Germany alone after its 1884 premiere. 2 CDs. Alfred Kuhn, Reinhard Hagen (basses), Regina Klepper (soprano), Katharina Kammerloher (mezzo), Hermann Prey (baritone), Christoph Späth (tenor), Cologne Radio Choir and Orchestra; Helmuth Froschauer. No libretto. Original 1997 release.
