Description: Lasting 44 minutes in this performance, the Études of c.1794 (also known as Leçons progressives, Op. 32) are one of those sets of instructional pieces of progressive difficulty but, very differently from most such collections, these twelve pieces are structured as consecutive sonata movements (so four short sonatas back-to-back-to-back). For added color, they also make use of Turkish, Russian, Polish, Scottish and Spanish folk music, appealing to the contemporary fashion for the exotic. The 28-minute Fantasy of 1811, really an eight-movement suite of separate parts, is more Romantic in its harmonic exploration and improvisatory spirit. Vincenzo Paolini (piano).
