Description: You wouldn't think of a work premiered in 1937 as being fodder for van Immerseel and Anima Eterna but think twice: Orff never originally intended for this to be performed by massive choirs and huge orchestral string sections. The strings have a modest role in the original score and Orff concentrates on unusual instrumental combinations: celesta with flutes, contrabassoon with tuba, high basssoon with three trombones. Gut strings were still used, wind instruments were not in the present state of evolution; period keyboards and skin percussion also make for a different sound. And the choir is only 36 voices here while the soloists were carefully chosen to be able to meet Orff's daunting writing. Latin-English texts. Yeree Suh (soprano), Yves Saelens (tenor), Thomas Bauer (baritone), Cantate Domino, Collegium Vocale Gent, Anima Eterna Brugge; Jos van Immerseel.
