ANDERS KOPPEL (b.1947): Concertos No. 1 for Marimba and Orchestra, No. 2 for Marimba and String Orchestra, No. 3 for Marimba and Orchestra "Linzer" and No. 4 for Marimba and Orchestra "In memory of things transient", P.S. to a Concerto for Marimba Solo.
Catalogue Number: 11Q078
Format: SACD hybrid
Description: Composed between 1995 and 2006, all of these concertos are characterized by the easy way in which Koppel moves between classical, jazz, world music and rock. Always based in tonality and usually using rhythm as an important element, Koppel creates a canvas ranging from ethereal strings supporting delicate marimba lines to hard-grooving rock rhythms while the generally mellow sounds the marimba produces allows it to meld with string and wind textures, adding orchestral color when it is not in the limelight. From the foot-tapping drama of No. 1's first movement, to the dripping-water nocturne of No. 2 to the quietly flourishing sense of optimism and wonder of No. 4, Koppel charts compelling paths of psychology and emotion. Marianna Bednarska (marimba), Aalborg Symphony Orchestra; Henrik Vagn Christensen.
