Description: Born in Romania and a student of Schoenberg (who thought him “one of the most interesting and talented” of his pupils), Hannenheim was listed among purveyors of “Degenerate Music” under the Nazis. His entire œuvre was destroyed by bombing of Berlin and he ended up a schizophrenic in a mental institution where he died almost five months after the end of the war in Europe. Lately, some of his works have turned up again in various locations (the three Stücke here are in manuscript). None of the pieces here are strictly 12-tone; Hannenheim used melodies as tone rows (the first movement of the first sonata has 54 “tones”) and his rhythms are inspired either by Bartók or by Romanian folk music of his own experience while his harmony is quite unconventional, from sharp atonal dissonances to chords (anathema to strict dodecaphonists). A real find for collectors of the Second Viennese School. Aida-Carmen Soanea (viola), Igor Kamenz (piano).
