Description: Volume 3 of this valuable series highlights Dodgson's chamber music with oboe. These works are typical of his output; meticulously crafted, tonal, with movement structures reflecting his interest in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The cor anglé sonata is traditionally structured in four movements, making the most of the plangent, elegiac and indefinably 'English' character of the instrument. The much later Oboe Sonata is structured more like a Baroque suite, and is recognisably from the same pen as the very early Suite. The pieces with harp - like the guitar, an instrumental speciality of Dodgson's - have a subtle, understated humour, and the addition of the oboe's melancholy tones to the songs to wintry texts by George Crabbe, Osbert Sitwell and Hilaire Belloc greatly enhances their sense of atmosphere. James Turnbull (oboe), Libby Burgess (piano), Eleanor Turner (harp), Robyn Allegra Parton (soprano).
