Description: This recital gathers together all the works commissioned for the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis since its inception in 1982. Despite the music's provenance as competition pieces, it reflects well on the distinguished composers chosen that flashy bravura virtuosity for its own sake is notably absent. The works are all fine representations of their composers' individual voices, and as such, most have subsequently been taken up in recital by soloists whose competition days are long behind them. All the works present formidable difficulties, but across the board; for instance, the Danielpour, a beautifully evocative scene from a location in France, is an object lesson in expression and co-operation in chamber music, and beauty of tone and sensitivity are emphasized by most of the composers. Those with the most modern idiom - Kirchner and Lutosławski - are at their most approachable here, the Lutosławski being a lively and humorous scherzo, the Kirchner a kind of 'tone poem' with multiple moods. Jinjoo Cho (violin), Hyun Soo Kim (piano).
