JEAN FRANÇAIX (1912-1997): L'Horloge de Flore for Oboe and Orchestra, String Quartet, Quartet for English Horn and String Trio, Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 12I070

Description: Oddly enough, there are no other recordings available of the two quartets - the string one an early work from 1934 and the other a late one from 1971 but both exhibiting the characteristic elegance, clarity, wit and charm one expects from this composer. The particular ability of the oboe and English horn to be both plucky and bright as well as tragically melancholy is exploited to the full in these works (as, of course, in the better-known "Flower Clock" of 1959). Lajos Lencsés (oboe, english horn), Parisii Quartet, Françaix Trio, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra; Uri Segal.
