GEORGE ROCHBERG (1918-2005): Symphony No. 1.
Catalogue Number: 12J102
Description: This 2004 recording represented the first time this symphony was performed in its entirety. Ormandy gave three of its five movements in Philadelphia in 1958 after Rochberg caved in to friends suggesting he should shorten the work. Revised in 1977 and again just prior to this recording, it now runs 64 minutes and gives an excellent idea of the absolute flood of ideas the young composer had while writing it in 1948-49. Tonal but pushing the limits of tonality at times, impassioned but hard-edged, ferocious and elegiac, discursive but strangely economical, it embodies the tensions which produced what Rochberg himself described as "hard romanticism". Saabrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra; Christopher Lyndon-Gee.
