Description: The Toccata et Variations, the two sets of pièces and the Cahier - all written between 1916-23 - are Honegger's major piano works, displaying the seriousness of purpose, density of writing and joy in counterpoint which one finds in most of his orchestral works. The late Partita (1940), a transcription reusing themes from a ballet and from a suite of incidental music, is equally impressive. The shorter (some are less than a minute long) pieces are often delightful but occupy a very different level. Jean-François Antonioli (piano), Ju-Ying Song (second piano).
