Description: The fourth release in this cycle includes the craggy, dark and emontionally impenetrable Sixth Symphony of 1948. In one movement lasting 29 minutes, Schuman creates a work of tight structural cohesion and emotional intensity fueled by melodic, rhythmic and harmonic complexity, not to mention considerably dense and intricate counterpoint which demands close attention (almost no musical material is ever repeated) and which will leave the audience as spent as, presumably, the orchestra. The Prayer, of 1943, is this month's American entry in the World War II music revue, a predominantly somber work of just over 15 minutes but which also has its heroic and soulful moments all using original thematic material as opposed to the rather better-known New England Triptych of 1956 which is based on three 18th century hymns by William Billings. Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz.
