Description: Eben's broadly-conceived 57-minute symphony with concertante organ was his graduation piece, written in 1954. Using Gregorian-style themes and a Brucknerian orchestral canvas (no woodwinds, but horns and trumpets, two harps and a large percussion section), its large, 27-minute first movement has something of the melancholy, in memoriam effect of the Schmidt Fourth. Flowing like a large, unhurried river, this is a magnificent example of late Romanticism from a composer who would later get more stylistically spiky.
