BOHUSLAV MARTINU (1890-1959): Piano Concertos, Vol. 2 - No. 1 in D, H. 349, No. 2, H. 237 and No. 4, H. 358 "Incantation".
Catalogue Number: 12M010
Description: Although we just offered Nos. 2 (1934, rev. 1944 and a classic example of the composer's neo-classical style with characteristic Czech intonations) and 4 (1955, with a dreamily lyrical first movement and a highly dramatic finale) on a full-price Ondine release recently (12L064), there is, amazingly, no other recording currently available of the half-hour long First of 1925. Some of Martinu's cross-rhythms are already here, as well as much of the neo-classicism which was so hot in Paris at that time, from Prokofiev to Poulenc. There are even shades of Ravel's Ondine in the slow movement while the finale returns to neo-classicism with a fugal second theme and a feeling of virtuosic frivolity. Giorgio Koukl (piano), Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra, Zlín; Arthur Fagen.
