EARL WILD (1915-2010): Grand Fantasy on "Porgy and Bess", 7 Virtuoso Études, Improvisation on "Someone to Watch over Me", Piano Sonata.
Catalogue Number: 12M014
Description: Everything here but the 17-minute sonata from 2000 is based on Gershwin's music, the Grand Fantasy (1976) taking eleven numbers from the opera, the Études of the same year choosing seven Gershwin songs and the Improvisation (1990, never performed in publich by Wild), taking well-known tunes and subjecting them to every imaginable demand for pianistic virtuosity, technique and sonority. The sonata is also full of American music - classic jazz, blues, ragtime and folk music in its first movement, hints of popular music of the 1920s (and maybe Johnny Mercer's Laura and even Bill Evans) in its slow movement and a Latin American toccata finale (its subtitle is "à la Ricky Martin"). Xiayin Wang (piano).
