Description: Tosti was not the only Italian composer to write vocal romances in English (setting often excruciating poetry) for English salons populated by neurasthenic and sexually repressed Victorians! But the fact that Piatti used his own instrument, the cello, to accompany along with the required piano, somehow takes the edge off the sappy quality of the poetry and its cheesy emotionalism. The beautiful singing cello lines make this release a true guilty pleasure. (The Italian poems are more varied in content but the settings are just as pretty.) English and Italian-English texts. Claudia Nicole Bandera (mezzo), Leonard De Lisi (tenor), Pierluigi Ruggiero (cello), Andrea Baggioli (piano).
