Description: This unexpectedly became a memorial concert for Furtwängler, who had turned down the invitation to conduct it himself but who had been expected to be present for the rehearsals and performance. Furtwängler died suddenly nine days before the two broadcast concerts. As Rob Cowan put it in the August 2010 Gramophone: "Jochum does a marvellous job, his reading very much in the Furtwängler mould, loose-limbed, dedicated and extremely moving: I listened twice through without tiring and by the end was fairly convinced that Furtwängler's Second Symphony is roughly comparable with Suk's Asrael symphony." 2 CDs.
