STEVEN MACKEY (b.1956): Dreamhouse.

Description: Dreamhouse arose from a commission that stipulated the use of electric guitars in a piece of concert music, and Mackey's use of this timbral element certainly gives the sound of the piece a distinctive flavor. But the participation of performance-artist/vocalist Rinde Eckert is equally important, and the piece ends up incorporating elements of several older genres of rock music, early-music madrigals (also predominantly tonal music sung in close harmony by small groups of vocalists, if you think about it), in a cheerfully eclectic tonal vocabulary that also owes something to the popular musical and the more accessible end of contemporary concert music. The libretto broadly concerns itself with the building of a suburban dream home, rather as though the script for a show on HGTV had been set to music, but deviates into suggestions - never a 'plot' as such - of the interpersonal relationships represented by home ownership, and issues of security and stability in an unstable modern world. Rinde Eckert (voice), Synergy Vocals, Catch Electric Guitar Quartet, Boston Modern Orchestra Project; Gil Rose.
