JONATHAN LESHNOFF (b.1973): Symphony No. 1 "Forgotten Chants and Refrains", Rush, Double Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 12M085
Description: A quote from Strings magazine calls Leshnoff's music "squarely in the middle of contemporary American romanticism". The concerto (2007) certainly accesses more of the past decades of approachable, if not actually neo-romantic, American symphonic music's mojo while the 2004 symphony and 2008 Rush (an eight-minute dose of kinetic energy) seem to fall more into the genre of "orchestral brilliance with plenty of bright percussion and cutting trumpets and horns in quasi-ceremonial/celebratory mode " which one finds from a lot of composers of Leshnoff's generation (and some earlier and later ones too). Charles Wetherbee (violin), Roberto Díaz (viola), IRIS Orchestra; Michael Stern.
