Description: The third and final volume brings us quartets from 1899 and 1917 which are further examples of the composer's Schubertian comfort zone although the Second approaches late Beethoven at points in its third movement Fantasia and the final Vivace furioso is a tarantella approaching hysteria. Notewriter Eckhardt van den Hoogen has found several thematic elements in the Fourth which seem to share their shapes with music from the Symphony No. 4 and the String Quintet but he cannot suggest what they might mean. However, it is useful to read his entire somewhat prolix note this time because he does an excellent job, through many quotes from the composer's own letters and autobiographies, of pointing out how utterly deceitful, dissembling and sociopathic Weingartner was as a person. Sarastro Quartet.
