Description: When The Firebird was premiered in 1910 in Paris, the orchestra played on string instruments with gut strings, piquant woodwinds and inimitable horns and used narrow-bore, French-made trumpets and trombones. This recording recreates the sound one would have heard at this first performance, preceded by Les Orientales, a blend of dances from various composers, orchestrated by Stravinsky where the originals were not orchestral works themselves, as an opening, companion piece. The original orchestrations are lost, so the Grieg and Sinding piano pieces have been re-orchestrated for these performances from two live concerts in Paris last year. Les Siècles; François-Xavier Roth.
