Description: Lermontov's poem about three palm trees in the Arabian desert who complain to God about their uselessness was the trigger for this 20-minute, single-movement quartet from 1977. The trees are cut down by Bedouins for firewood, thus serving their purpose through their own destruction. The Holocaust? The deaths of the rest of Weinberg's family members? Life under Soviet musical dictatorship? Or all three? Despair and grief lead to absolute desolation at the end of this work probably receiving its first recording. Each of its disc-mates has only one other currently available recording: the boisterous, garish and sarcastic trumpet concerto of 1967 written for Dokshitser and the 1950 string trio which contains some of the same mixture as his contemporary string quartets of festiveness in the outer movements and lyrical sorrow in the slow movement with overtones perhaps of Jewish folk music.
