PIOTR MOSS (b.1949): 5 tableaux de Caspar David Friedrich for Orchestra, Voyage for 2 Harps and Orchestra, Meditation and Psalm for Choir and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 12N080
Description: One of the most pleasant surprises of the month! Like many Polish composers of his generation, Moss has plenty of experience writing film music and it shows in all these works. The biggest and most striking is the 34-minute set of Friedrich-inspired tableaux from 2007 ("Fog", "Tree with Ravens", "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog", "Woman before the Setting Sun" and "Abbey in the Oak Forest") - you'll recognize several album-cover staples there - in which the damp of the fog is palpable, the dissonant cries of the ravens horror-film creepy, the abbey haunted and desolate. The same sense of color is present in the 24-minute double harp concerto of 2000 while the Meditation and Psalm (2001) is reminiscent of late period Penderecki. Grazyna Strzeszewska, Anna Sikorzak-Olek (harps), Polish Radio Choir in Krakow, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice; Michal Klauza.
