Description: The final volume of this series brings us what are, chronologically, Ries' Second and Eighth (and last) concertos. The former dates from 1811-12 and has much of the rugged Beethovenian quality of the Emperor concerto in its first movement while the finale has an embedded Russian folk tune (Ries was in Moscow when he wrote it and intended this as an extra fillip for local audiences but he ended up having to flee Napoleon's invasion before he could perform it there). The op. 177 comes from 1833 and shows no loss of power or imagination even though Ries and the other lights of his generation, principally Hummel, were soon to be swept away by a younger Romantic generation. Christopher Hinterhuber (piano), New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; Uwe Grodd.
