Description: Set against the violent and bloody backdrop of the French Revolution, Respighi's opera was completed in 1915 but, for uncertain reasons, was never premiered until 2004 (in Rome). Firmly in the period of decadantismo in Italian opera, its opulence and, for lack of a better word, its "excessiveness" put it in with similar works by Montemezzi, Alfano, Pizzetti and Zandonai and one of the note-writers groups it with Schreker's Die Gezeichneten and Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten whose length, subtlety and complexity gave contemporary audiences no end of trouble trying to comprehend them. Yes, there's plenty of Respighian orchestral color, in fact more of it as the opera goes along, although the orchestra is not the gigantic one of his orchestral tone poems. 3 CDs. French-English libretto. Takesha Meshé Kizart (soprano), Germán Vilar (tenor), Markus Brück, Simon Pauly (baritones), Stephen Bronk (bass-baritone), Chorus and Orchestra of the Deutschen Oper Berlin; Michail Jurowski.
