Description: This 28-year-old Latvian pianist provides a feast of unusual Wagner repertoire here, the most unusual perhaps not being the 19-year-old composer's big, 27-minute Fantasia which begins with Beethoven and goes off into operatic drama with multiple themes and elaboration. No, the oddest thing is probably Gould's transcription, notorious for its slow, intense concentration on polyphony and milking every drop of voluptuous Romanticism out of the melodies - and here Shimkus is faithful to Gould's recording to the point of even being almost a minute longer! Vestard Shimkus (piano). SACD hybrid.
