MAURICE EMMANUEL (1862-1938): Sonatines No. 1 "Bourguignonne", No. 2 "Pastorale", No. 3, No. 4 "sur des modes hindous", No. 5 "alla francese" and No. 6.
Catalogue Number: 12O060
Description: These brief, delightful works were written over a period of 1893-1926 but are stylistically consistent. Chabrier's rhythmic verve and Debussy's impressionism are combined with Emmanuel's own fluent counterpoint and taste for diatonic dissonance with an original melodic language deriving from multiple sources, as the subtitles of four of the sonatines make plain: Burgundian folk-songs, bird-song (Pastorale), Indian music and French neo-baroque-isms. The remaining two are equally lively and charmingly Gallic. Laurent Wagschal (piano).
