Description: The 1898 sonata, written while still at the Schola Cantorum, was only published in 1990 and, as far as I know, the only other recording was on a dead French label called Revolum which probably came out in the late 1980s. A four-movement piece of 39 minutes in this performance, it both uses D'Indy's preferred cyclic method and also introduces more than a little modal music which already identifies Sévérac the mature composer (and of the 32-minute quasi-tone-poem-suite Le Chant de la terre which followed only two years later. The short Stances (1909), also rarely recorded, is a look back at another preoccupation of the Schola, namely French muisc of the baroque. Jordi Masó (piano).
