Description: Most of Bliss' piano music is early and the late (1952) sonata, a powerful and muscular work, has been recorded a few times in the last two decades. We have three world premiere recordings here though: the Valses of 1913 are the biggest, apparently inspired by Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales while the 1910 May-Zeeh (a quality salon waltz) and 1912 Intermezzo (a serious work foreshadowing much that was to come) are shorter. The 1925 suite is close to the sonata in its gravity, especially the Elegy for Bliss' younger brother, killed in the Great War. Mark Bebbington (piano).
