Description: Marking out significant points in Pfitzner's life, this disc offers us the early, very Brahmsian Op. 1 of 1890, the 1917 Op. 27, a wartime piece written in 1918 just before he was to be driven out of his position in Strasbourg by the victorious French (a remarkably joyous finale given the circumstances), and another wartime work, the 1942set of etudes, focussing, as etudes do, on particular technical issues, in the deeply Romantic, conservative vein of his maturity. Only one other recording of the Studien. Reinhold Johannes Buhl (cello), Heidrun Sandmann (violin), Ulrich Urban (piano).
