Description: Given that Rosenthal was a pupil of Leschetizky, friend of Godowsky, acquaintance of Grieg and highly successful touring pianist, it's hard to believe that we've never heard of him and the pianist on this recording only thought to investigate him upon noticing that he was the dedicatee of two Moeran piano pieces. The music (50 minutes of it here) turns out to be stylish, lyrical and beautifully crafted salon-type material, combining Celtic melancholy with the central European gem├╝tlichkeit Rosenthal imbibed during a decade-long residence in Vienna. The other Irish newcomer here, Beckett, provides three late Romantic/Impressionistic Preludes from 1942 and a Celtic flavored pastoral from his late youth (1926). Duncan Honeybourne (piano).
