Description: Almost fve years ago (02N048) we told you, in a blurb for a second recording of The Grasishopper in its violin-and-piano version that the orchestral version “will soon be heard on cpo”. Better late than never, here it is and it turns out to be a fine example of the Late Romantic Violin Concerto, demanding a “crack fiddler” (as Holbrooke put it) and with a lusciously colorful orchestration. From the same year (1906), the Auld Lang Syne variations follow Elgar with initials representing friends heading each of the 20 variations, again richly instrumented. The Raven is Holbrooke’s first of many works inspired by Poe, an 18-minute long symphonic poem from 1900 firmly in the Lisztian-Wagnerian tradition. Judith Ingolfsson (violin), Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt; Howard Griffiths.
