Description: A professional cavalryman, Beecke’s most-admired composer was Haydn and, among some 330 compositions, he wrote 27 symphonies and 15 piano concertos. The two complete ones here are from 1780 and 1785, the former particularly striking for its recitative-like opening, followed by a big arioso movement and a rondo finale (think of the Spohr Violin Concerto No. 8 and the many recitative passages in C.P.E. Bach). Beecke also gives wind instruments many opportunities for color and in the concerto slow movement recorded here, the oboe part practically makes it a double concerto.
