Description: The first of Davies' concerti commissioned by Strathclyde Regional Council is a virtuoso dialogue between oboe and orchestra, with solo writing of the highest technical demands, while avoiding anything extended or avant garde - the work, from 1987, falls firmly into the composer's later, extended-tonality based idiom. It derives its material from plainchant, specifically referring to the feast of Pentecost, which accounts for the flickering flames suggested in much of the solo writing, cadenza, and buoyant, scintillating textures. The cello concerto is a predominantly lyrical work, with mainly slow tempi, which garnered comparisons with the Elgar concerto when it first appeared. Like the Second Symphony from seven years earlier, it draws inspiration from the fluid natural phenomena that surrounded the composer's Orkney home - flights of birds, and the undulating shoals of fish visible from the island's towering cliffs. Robin Miller (oboe), William Conway (cello), Scottish Chamber Orchestra; Peter Maxwell Davies. Original 1989 release.
