Description: This 44-minute choral symphony was only discovered recently, in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, by Paul Spicer while researching his biography of the composer. Written for his 1917 doctoral examination, it sets Psalm 107 with the command of a large structure, stong contrapuntal interplay between voices and skill at working up dramatic tension which are present in his mature works - like the 1933 St Paul’s Voyage with which the symphony, in its finale, shares an exciting and colorful representation of the sea and its dangers. Texts included. Elizabeth Watts (soprano), Caitlin Hulcup (mezzo), Joshua Ellicott (tenor), Roderick Williams (baritone), The Bach Choir, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; David Hill.
