Description: Like a craftsman or sculptor, returning to the same plastic form and reinventing it with a new purpose or from an alternative angle, Jarrell has written a number of works with elements in common, in some cases extracting a part from a previous work and expanding upon it in its own right - as for example in ... mais les images restent ... , a tumultuous cascade of notes interspersed with cavernous resonances, which builds on the solo part of his piano concerto Abschied of two years earlier. Similarly, Aus Bebung, as the title suggests, is the extraction of the two solo parts from an earlier version, Bebung (1995), with ensemble; and it gives rise to the greatly expanded ...es bleibt eine zitternde Bebung... with orchestra. Jarrell's training as a visual artist and the acknowledged influence of Paul Klee, whose assemblages of forms in apparent complex movement are a visual analogue of Jarrell's musical style. Indeed, Jarrell's forms - anything from an interval or gesture to an orchestral explosion that contains the compressed material of the piece - seem to be constantly energised and galvanized into perpetual motion. Ernesto Molinari (clarinet), Thomas Demenga (cello), Marino Formenti (piano), WDR Symphony Orchestra; Peter Rundel.
